October 26 My frequent flier trips
Further to my previous post on my first flight experience, I really had a chance to fly in an airline, for more than couple of occasions. In fact, the itinerary of schedule I had looks like below
And given the fact that all fo them was within 7 days, it really became quite hectic.
But this time, the trips were a pleasant one and the purpose of the visits were also official and worth to mention.
The fact that I had a chance to fly 3 different airlines, gave a good view of their different services
Air Sahara was a comfortable journey with good leg space to stretch. However, their crew werent that much courteous
Indian Airlines, well what do I say, they need to improve their crew's presentability, professionalism
Kingfisher airlines, the one I liked the most for their on board experience. The crew and on board staff were very professional and extended a warm welcome as well as gave a good comfort feeling.
I didnt have a chance to compare their rates but what mattered to me was, how the same job can be done in a better way.
This reminds me of the famous best seller "How to be successful in life". The famous quote in the book is, "Winners dont do different things. They do things in a different way!" What I look for in Lateral Interviews - Part IIThis is in continuation with my earlier post
DOs
Try to be alert, confident and willing to listen. May times people are rejected just because, they show lackingness in listening to the interviewer.
Try to precisely tell what you have done in a project and what are the challenges you faced.
Try to be crisp and invite questions and respond to them in a professional manner. Many times, people drag their speech which actually diverts the interviewer's attention.
DONTs
Dont try to be over smart or talk too lengthy about your project. Remember, the company needs your experience, not the project specification.
Dont try to give an indication about your willingnes / unwillingness to do certain things. Be prepared to do any kind of activity in a project. Remember, in a project, there would be coding and there would also be documentation, Quality process etc., and we developers are a part of everything.
Dont try to argue with the interviewer regarding your answer in case he says it is wrong. If you feel it is right, tell in a polite way that you feel you are correct and that you will check and revert anyway.
Most of the interviewers try to trap you with some question which they know and you wont have a chance to know. Admit if you dont know so that you can skip that question quickly. If you try to balance it, you will have an ordeal with such questions.
Last but not the least, try to be dressed well, walk straight, show cheerfullness in your face and try to be as best as you would be for a bride / groom visit before marriage. After all, your job is next important to your family life.
Hope I could provide some guidance.
October 16 What I look for in Lateral InterviewsI have been doing a lot of Lateral Interviews for my Company and thought of sharing what I, or in general, interviewers look for in Laterals.
It is an important thing to share because, many of the current people get turned off in interviews not because of their technical lacking but lack of certain basic ethics.
Many people these days come with 2 ~ 3 years experience and expect them to be placed as direct Leads involving zero coding job and just managing people.
First of all, let me cover the basics
DO's
Please keep up the time and if you are turning in late, inform the HR person well in advance. Of course, this doesnt account for 10-15 minutes delay but if it is considerably late, its better to inform.
Please try to stick to the schedule. If you are schedule for an in-person interview, avoid missing it and rescheduling it. Getting an Interviwers' time these days is very difficult and they are not just doing this job. They do this as an additional effort for the Organization. So, try to stick to the schedule.
I will deal with the important points, once you start getting interviewed in my next post.
Thanks.
October 14 Yelagiri - Nice place for short tripLast Month, I took a break and went to Yelagiri.
Yelagiri is situated amidst the Chennai - Bangalore Highway, 10-20 kms from Jolarpettai.
It is a good place for a short vacation if you are bored with Ooty or Kodaikanal. The good thing is that, the place is not yet polluted by the crowd of visitors.
There are decent hotels and resorts at affordable costs.
The climate is not too cold and it is comparably as good as Hyderabad in winter times, but definitely much better than the always hot Chennai.
Yelagiri boasts of an artificial lake (which I didnt like), a small Lord Subrahmanya Temple (which I liked very much), some trekking adventures and high tall forest trees.
If you are planning for a short vacation for 1/2 days at a drive away place, Yelagiri is a good place to go.
The nearest airport is Chennai or Bangalore and you get a lot of Cabs, Buses plying between Bangalore and Chennai which stop at Jolarpettai.
From Jolarpettai, its about a half-an-hour drive above the hill with little to 15 hairpin bends. The cab to take from Jolarpettai railway station to up hill, should not cost more than 350 bucks.
As always, I was stupid, not to have taken camera so lost the chance of capturing pictureque sceneries.
Cheers
